How to Wash and Maintain Sunsmart Clothing

People who spend a lot of time outdoors understand the importance of proper sun protection.

While sunscreen with SPF is a common solution, UPF clothing provides an added layer of protection by blocking both UVA and UVB rays from ever reaching the skin.

To ensure that your sun protection clothing actually lasts, it's essential to care for your UPF clothes properly. The good news? Caring for UPF clothing is pretty simple.

Here's our expert tips.

1. Check the Care Label

Before you dive into washing your SunSmart clothing, always start by reading the care label. Each garment may have specific care instructions that you should follow to maintain its UV-blocking properties.

2. Hand Wash or Use a Gentle Cycle

Whether you're washing a swimsuit, rash guard, or any other SunSmart clothing item, it's best to hand wash them in cold water or use a gentle cycle on your washing machine. The gentle cycle minimises wear and tear on the fabric, helping it retain its UV protection.

3. Choose the Right Detergent

Opt for a mild detergent that is free from bleach or harsh chemicals. Harsh detergents can degrade the fabric's UV-blocking capabilities over time. Eco-friendly and hypoallergenic options are often a safe bet.

4. Skip Fabric Softeners

Fabric softeners may leave a residue on your SunSmart clothing that can diminish its UV protection. Avoid using them during the washing process.

5. Don't put them in the dryer

While the temptation to use a dryer is understandable, it's better to air-dry your SunSmart clothing. The high heat from dryers can weaken the fabric's UV-blocking properties.

6. Don’t wring out your sun protection clothing.

This can permanently stretch the fibers and lower the UPF rating.

UPF clothing that is properly cared for will last 30 to 40 washes. This means most will last roughly one to two years under normal usage of a few times a month.
